This includes dry and brittle hair and overprocessed hair as well as curly hair types. To prevent matted hair, it’s important to keep your scalp and hair moisturized properly and to brush or comb hair every day as this removes loose strands. To make taking care of your hair as easy as possible, the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab tests the top-performing hair products on the market. When the Lab tests hair brushes for our annual GH Beauty Awards, our scientists conduct both in-Lab and consumer testing to find the best of the best. We ask testers of all ages, with all hair types, textures and lengths, to use the brushes in their routine for a set period of time, taking note of both what they liked and what they didn't like.

And since this formula was made with skin sensitivities in mind (fragrance, lactose, soy and gluten), you can expect a gentle formulation that won't cause irritation. We prefer a travel detangling brush that pulls above its weight class, and Drybar's little yellow brush is far superior to your last-minute airport buy. If you like a little smoothing with your detangling, try this affordable option from The Hair Edit, which won't leave behind a fluffy, frizzy finish. This curly girl favorite is all about the slip it adds to each curl making tangles and knots slide out with little effort. For best results, apply this product before shampooing and detangle from the bottom up. Investing in the proper tools and taking the time to carefully tackle knots is necessary to avoid tugging and damaging your hair.

She writes to create awareness about the clean beauty movement and simple curly hair care. So if you know you have hair prone to tangling, it’s best to avoid this type of chemical exposure. If you do want to use chemicals on your hair, it’s important to care for it with regular moisturizing treatments and always use a heat protectant before using heat styling tools.

Several customers also raved about how much shine the tool delivered to their strands. "It’s lightweight and my hair dried really fast and was shiny, like I got it professionally done at a salon," wrote one reviewer. One of the downsides to the brush, however, is that customers said the bristles are pretty short, making it pretty hard for them to reach the scalp. Still most customers said this is budget-friendly hair dryer brush that works on most hair types. Having fine hair means that any movement, like even a lil sudden burst of wind, and your hair is a total mess and in a million and one knots.

" You will create your best styles when you are most at ease and confident, not feeling like styling is a strenuous task," says Uribe. You should also opt for something that you're comfortable holding, preferably cordless or with a swivel cord. "It'll allow you to move the brush in different directions and angles without the cords tangling during use, adds Raziuddin.

When she's not shopping for a living, she enjoys karaoke and dining out more than she cares to admit. The best option is to dampen your hair with water and then apply conditioner or another moisturizing product very generously throughout the matted area. Chemical procedures like coloring, perming, or relaxing your hair usually involve restructuring the hair strands. This can make it more difficult for your hair to retain moisture and lead to your hair becoming dry and brittle.

If you’re looking for a brush at a lower price point, this is the one for you. Whether you have straight, wavy, curly, or coily hair, this detangling brush will get the job done and will easily pass through any hair type. To remove hair stuck in the bristles, Uribe recommends running a tail comb or brush over the dryer brush and separating the hair out of the tool. To deep clean the brush, Raziuddin suggests using a cloth or cotton pad with rubbing alcohol.

It’s great for getting through bigger tangles, so if my hair is really knotted, I’ll use this first before going through with a finer brush, like the Tangle Teezer shared below. These top-notch brushes glide through knots and tangles with ease. Fitzsimons says it's best to check the ingredients list before you buy. "Products formulated with these ingredients produce thick, gelatinous substances that coat hair strands and allow fingers, brushes and combs to glide effortlessly over them." Without snagging and pulling, you’ll love the effortless way this detangles your hair.

The unique bristle design cuts brushing time in half and prevents breakage. If you want to go an extra step, use a brush with ceramic plates to further help protect against damage. "Ceramic plates help distribute heat evenly when blow-drying your hair, which can minimize damage." This brush uses infrared heat and negative ion technology to reduce frizz and seal the hair cuticle for a sleek finish. It also has a blend of two kinds of bristles that are meant to provide extra volume to your roots.

Clumps of matted hair contain strands that have already been shed, so these will be freed as you gently loosen the mat. As long as you have moisturized your locks properly and don’t tug too much, you shouldn’t see any breakage or new hair loss. Whichever moisturizing product you choose, it’s a good idea to leave it to soak in for minutes before you try to detangle your hair. If you have severely matted hair you could use a deep moisturizing conditioner and leave it overnight for maximum impact. This detangling gem is an investment, but the benefits are worth it. It's handcrafted with soft boar bristles that not only seamlessly detangle, but also help eliminate excessive product buildup and kickstart blood circulation in the scalp—all things that help promote hair growth.

Knots and tangles can quickly turn into severe mats, so make sure that you comb your hair every day and use detanglers with every wash. Detangling shampoo and conditioner can help to smooth your hair and reduce friction between the strands. After a few visits to a curly stylist, I learned how important it is to detangle your hair through the wash day process. Because I recently bleached my type 4 coils blonde, I've been diligent about detangling so I don't cause breakage. My TikTok "For You Page" knows how much I love beauty, especially hair care. So it's no surprise I get served videos about the latest viral hair products and tools all the time.

If you're looking for a detangling paddle brush, Ouidad's will get the job done efficiently. It's great for thick hair, thanks to its long, crimped bristles and staggered bristle pattern. The surface area of the paddle brush is also larger than standard brushes, so you'll be able to brush your hair out more quickly. For super knotty hair, you may want to start the detangling during your cleanse and conditioning session. It really is miraculous and helps to soften, smooth, hydrate and detangle even the most vulnerable of strands.

Without regular moisturizing and detangling, the curls and coils can grow around each other and get tangled up. If this isn’t dealt with, more tangles can develop into matted hair. One of the most important steps to avoiding tangled and matted hair is making sure that your hair is always well-moisturized. As well as using detangling shampoo and conditioner when you wash your hair, it’s also a good idea to use a hair oil or hair mask every week and leave it on for at least an hour.

It’s vital to keep as much moisture as possible in your locks if you want to avoid getting tangled and matted hair. Using hydrating products like deep conditioners, coconut oil or Moroccan argan oil will help to get moisture in and prevent protein loss. Regular protein treatments can also help to decrease friction and tangling by filling in any gaps in your hair cuticles. It’s essential to use a special detangling brush or a sturdy wide toothed comb for this task, as a regular brush or fine tooth comb will pull or break strands and clumps of your hair. Once you’ve dealt with the worst of the tangling and matting, you can move to a fine toothed comb or brush for the final hair knots. Apply a generous amount of leave-in conditioner, detangling spray, or an oil like coconut oil or olive oil to help the strands slip easily past each other.

The key to easily detangling any hair texture is a flexible detangling brush. This one lives up to its name—it's designed with flexible brackets to gently slip through tangles without snags and tears. This anti-frizz, anti-static brush from Olivia Garden gets a nod of approval from our beauty editor, who has thick waves. Before beginning your detangling journey, take a deep breath and follow these simple tips from hairstylist Jen Atkin. Regardless of texture, Atkin says the key is to start at the ends of the hair and work your way up to the roots. Taylor Augustin is a freelance beauty and fashion writer based in Newport Beach, California. She interviewed experts and tested detangling brushes herself for this story. She’s currently in the process of getting her hair bride-worthy for her wedding in 2024, and her hair’s health is of the utmost importance to her.

That’s because you can’t comb your hair, and combing helps to remove the 100+ hairs that you shed daily. Matted hair happens when shed hair strands get tangled around hairs that are still attached to your scalp, which causes a knot. As the tangles get worse, they trap dirt and sweat which then turns them into tightly matted clumps of hair.

But if you have the correct tools and techniques and you’re willing to put in the time, you can detangle your hair painlessly and without cutting it. It’s better to detangle matted hair when it’s damp rather than dry or very wet. The additional moisture makes it easier for the hairs to slip against each other, which helps to untangle your locks. This is the third brush in the collection, and it's ideal for anyone with thin or fine hair.

We tested several options for days at a time and then collaborated with three expert hairstylists to ensure we made the best picks for all hair types and needs. If you have fine hair and are worried about hair loss from brushing, you need to try this out. With less bristles that are spaced out and flexible, this brush will gently detangle both wet and dry fine hair.

Similarly, in our most recent test to find the best hair dryer brushes, testers evaluated the brushes and filled out a detailed survey on ease of use, performance and overall satisfaction. For this, the Lab collected data from 784 questions gathered from 49 questionnaires. After all of this research, our Lab pros aggregate and analyze the feedback to share the best hair products for your money. Overall, our favorite detangling brush is the FHI HEAT UNbrush Wet & Dry Vented Detangling Hair Brush because of its low price and vented shape that won’t stretch or break hair.

Start by using a wide tooth comb or detangling brush to work through just the last few inches of your hair, then when that is free from tangles, move your comb a few inches higher up, and so on. For the past few months, I've only used my fingers to detangle my hair in the shower. I didn't realize how time-consuming this was until I tried the UNbrush.

my house doom

After getting all the skull keys, you will rearrange the House layout again - the front door and both doors leading to the garage will disappear and you will be unable to leave the inside of the House as a result. Approaching the front door causes a new door to suddenly appear on the top floor, next to the door to the master bedroom. This door leads into a sitting room containing a can of Pop you can pick up. This is the first of sixteen "artifacts" you will find. Icons denoting eight of these artifacts will appear on hanging pictures in the House's living room as the artifacts are found. Upon picking up the Pop, another door to a new room in a black-and-white Bauhaus architecture style will suddenly appear just opposite.

You might also want to check out some of the best horror games, especially if you enjoy MyHouse’s brand of creepy, architectural terror. Romero even follows up the MyHouse run by completing the first level of Doom 2, Underhalls, 100%. Whichever way you cut it, it’s great to see the grandmaster of FPS games blasting his way through his original, infernal creation after all these years. If you play it, remember that MyHouse is like an onion. It has many layers, each revealing more lore while raising questions about the next layer.

Don't know where this key is but I'll update in a new edit when I do. There’s a section of MyHouse's journal where the game’s creator wakes up to find that the game itself has split into two files, a WAD and a PK3. To properly run MyHouse, you must drag the .PK3 file onto your executable file. To play MyHouse, you must consent to your own haunting.

An ambulance, an empty lot and a loophole: One man’s fight for a place to live

The Bauhaus room contains the Milkshake, the second artifact. Many players find it difficult to get the "good" ending on their own. The journal found in the Google Drive with the map download provides context to the game content and also hints in both content and formatting. It is recommended to attempt the map on your own and reach an ending first, then read the journal before reading these hints. This section contains small hints that are meant to contain minimal spoilers and have been observed to regularly help players get to the "good" ending without them needing to read the full walkthrough.

The base for a more activist, more aggressive, but also more strategic left politics exists. Students in inner-city high schools in California are a sleeping dragon. If you measure things by opinion polls, this generation is more leftwing than the 1930s. A huge number of people under 30 say they’re in favor of socialism or they’re prepared to listen to arguments for socialism. For decades, the southern California writer Mike Davis has obsessively documented the dark side of the Golden state – its wildfires, earthquakes, megalomaniac real estate developers and violent police departments.

A ‘Buffy’ obsession became an opening door. Now Jane Schoenbrun returns the favor

In his honor, I've been cleaning up his map for release and adding some ZDoom/UDMF features for the sake of convenience." By the end of the brutalist section, you should have eight of the known artifacts, with two more to go in the airport bathroom. Do you have to pick up the first pill bottle, but avoid the portal sequence that bloodies the walls and not get the second pill bottle? Or does it just mean that after you clear out the Demons and leave the bathroom, the blood is now gone, the entrance is unsullied, and the "reward" is the second pill bottle? I tried it both ways, and both still led to Ending 1.

my house doom

A large group of counter-protesters wearing black with white masks made their way to the encampment and began striking students with planks of wood and pepper spray, Daniel Harris told the Guardian. UCLA students who witnessed the moments leading up to the attack on the encampment described a harrowing scene, which started before midnight. He was branded “the prophet of doom” and some called him too critical, a delusional lefty. But in recent years, Davis’s warnings of ecological and social destruction have begun to sound increasingly prophetic. As California struggles with soaring wealth inequality and homelessness, new protests over police violence erupt, and the mansions of Malibu burn again and again, his writing has only become more relevant.

Evil Dog doesn't drop the missing blue keycard or anything like that. There's a panel in the abstract brutalist section that requires the blue keycard. This is the only one of the six keys I never found, so I have no idea what's there.

All is lost in San Francisco? City loyalists take issue with naysayers. Data may back them up

At first, the house featured in the mod is a fairly normal replica of a late 90s or early 2000s two-story home, but therein lies the first thing that set people off about the mod. An upstairs and downstairs would normally require two separate maps connected by a stairway. The posts continued until he seemingly shared the finished mod on March 2, 2023, and then disappeared, not having been heard from since. However, the community surrounding the mod created an entire 58-page thread as players unraveled the rabbit hole of one of the most bizarre and creepy Doom 2 levels ever made.

In the original Legend Of Zelda, for example, it's the manual that gives you the only clues you will get from the game to defeat Ganon. Similarly, without MyHouse’s journal, you will miss clues, and the story context for how this WAD was made. At this point, I decided to see what happens if you avoid the airplane. I know I'm supposed to find the painting in the living room somehow, now that I have them.

They were early levels for Doom, and to honor his friend’s memory, Veddge decided to rebuild these levels and post them. The map is massive with multiple endings and has been compared more to a piece of art or a sequel in itself than a simple Doom map. In the Google Drive where you can download the game are also files, including journal entries and photos, that reveal more of the lore behind the map, turning the whole experience into more of a creepypasta than a simple map. It's best to go into the game as blind as possible to avoid spoilers, but there are also plenty of videos on YouTube exploring every nook and cranny of the experience, some with millions of views. MyHouse.Wad is a custom Doom II map with an interesting backstory. Created by DoomWorld user Veddge, the story goes that Veddge found the map on a floppy disc at his recently deceased friend Tom's house.

After successfully collecting one of the artifacts, you'll notice an icon corresponding to the artifact will appear on rectangular portraits near the kitchen in the House. Different objects are displayed even in the Mirror House. Other than being necessary to truly finish the mod, they do not support nor harm the player in anyway. Deciding to finish and release it as a tribute to his friend, he finds himself growing obsessed with perfecting it, and is plagued by strange nightmares.

When playing this map, all cheats are effectively disabled on all difficulties, with the exception of god mode and noclip. The player's view height has been changed from 41 to 54, presumably to more closely approximate the real-world scale of the House, and its various alternative areas. A ZDoom MAPINFO lump alters the colors on the automap, changing everything to full black to force the player to navigate without much help from the automap.

There's even a fight with Shrek mixed in for good measure. Doom II fans are eating well right now after discovering an impressively made, creepypasta-like map called MyHouse.Wad. The map is being celebrated across social media through Let's Plays, fan art and memes as players discover all the secrets hidden within it. Here's why players are so obsessed over the map and how you can play it for yourself. Also continuing from where @Not Jabba left off, I found a bit more details but not anything too groundbreaking.

How To Play MyHouse.Wad

But while Los Angeles police arrived at the scene at about 1.40am, officers did not immediately break up the two sets of protesters, and the clashes continued for at least an hour, the Los Angeles Times and CalMatters reported. Both of our kids [the couple’s now 18-year-old twins], all their friends turned out for Black Lives Matter. So much attention was given to the participation of whites in the protests, but I think the most exciting part was the number of new immigrant kids, Latinos, who were in the thick of it.

Myhouse.wad

The map's eerie house hides a massive number of secrets and cryptic puzzles, many of which involve Alien Geometries that stretch the limits of what should be possible within Doom. A more talented friend of mine told me that the journal in the game’s folder would give me clues. There was a point in video game history when it was almost impossible to proceed without reading the game’s manual or the readme in the installation folder.

So for something like MyHouse to exist is almost impossible. So, now we're in the brutalist sections...but we have the blue keycard this time. The locked vent opens a small closet with a plasma rifle and a decent cache of ammo and health (but doesn't seem to offer any deeper answers than that). I also found an additional (tenth) artifact this time.

Our ruling classes everywhere have no rational analysis or explanation for the immediate future. A small group of people have more concentrated power over the human future than ever before in human history, and they have no vision, no strategy, no plan. They say emerging tech hubs — think Nashville, Miami, Austin — can’t really compare. If this sounds drab and repetitive, it's not – or at least it doesn't have to be. Once players realize there is much more to the house than there appears to be, they begin to understand that the exit is not the way out. It's just a red herring to keep them running in circles.

Even after reaching the airport section I'm not sure I've seen everything, heh. If the uppercase letters are taken from the CREDITS file, the string SELESTNSOAJYIKHYMMU is obtained. This is an anagram that when unscrambled yields THANK YOUS ESSEL JIMMY, crediting the composers which are otherwise left out of the plain text credits.

Screenshot of the original MyHouse post to doomworld. Imagine playing this thinking you are just helping a fella out by playing through their house. It sounds like a lot, but it's actually a short distance and you get the hang of it pretty quickly. I'm going to call the direction you're currently facing "north." Now, you're in the cubicle on the opposite side of the wood-trimmed tunnel, facing north.

But the most surprising aspects regarding My House are how it’s not only a fantastic mod, but also one of gaming’s best literary adaptations ever. If MyHouse isn’t already an icon of horror gaming, it soon will be. The commentsfollowing the WAD’s drop on the DoomWorld forum is a historical document of gamerscoming to terms with something incredible that they cannot quite comprehend.

Biophilic Design Basics International Living Future Institute

biophilia design

This makes the need for a healthy natural environment - and its integration with the built environment - even stronger and more urgent. To understand the deep underpinnings of biophilia and its manifestation in today’s cultural and physical landscape, we need to start with our ancestral life as mobile hunting and gathering bands on the African savannahs. Buildings are newcomers on the evolutionary scene – a mere 6,000 or so years old. For most of human existence, the natural landscape provided the resources necessary for survival, chief among them water, vegetation, sunlight, animals, building materials, shelter, sky, and fire.

Nature of Cities, Berlin 4-7 June 2024

Of particular interest is that the degree of enhanced immune function due to immersion in nature has been observed to differ between the genders. Historically, humans have built shelters from locally available materials that reflected the regional ecology; form and function were in response to the topography and climate. Known as vernacular architecture, these buildings and constructed landscapes connect to where they inhabit. Use of local timber, climate responsive design and xeriscaping – using native, drought tolerant plants to create landscape designs that resemble the climate of the surrounding landscape – can each be effective strategies in designing for a resilient, biophilic experience.

The Typology of Human Experience With the Natural Environment

Or at least focus on creating a very low impact on the surrounding environment. They don’t even need to be of direct elements of nature like plants or landscapes. Even having abstract shapes and patterns with the right colors can make us think of nature. Coupled with having actual plants and natural features, choosing artwork inspired by the outdoors can help complete the look of a room or building. Wall prints, wall hangings, and paintings are all great choices that can bring part of nature into our buildings.

Add some houseplants indoors

The shades will also curb energy costs by either reducing or increasing solar heat gain, depending on the season. The visual connection to nature can be achieved in the home with large expanses of glass or large windows. Twenty minutes of daily visual connection is ideal, so nature views work best in rooms that you use a lot, like a kitchen or family room.

1 Nature in the Space

Forest fires, droughts, floods, and temperatures well into the 100’s are increasingly common. Nature is under siege, leading to increasing negative consequences for life and health of both humans and other living species. Biophilic design aims to reconnect people with nature in ways that support both human and biological health in the built environment. Wilson also introduced a conservation ethic based on multiple dimensions of the innate relationship humans share with nature. Biophilia's core principle is to connect humans with nature, and as a result, improve well-being. Adding some greenery and plants in some buildings alone, will not create a biophilic environment.

The beauty and expansiveness of nature can lead people to appreciate the grandeur of the universe, put their personal worries into perspective, and be more attentive to their world and their relationships. The term is thought to have been coined by the renowned psychologist Erich Fromm, but it was popularized by Harvard biologist Edward O. Wilson through his 1984 book Biophilia. In it, Wilson proposed that humans’ attraction to nature is genetically predetermined and the result of evolution. Technology also makes it easy and inexpensive to bring nature sounds into your home.

biophilia design

Moreover, buildings with natural materials and furniture will enhance the feeling of nature because we will literally be surrounded by materials found in nature. One of the ways to incorporate water in architecture is to simply build near lakes or oceans for example. There are many innovative, modern buildings that have decorative pools of water inside, indoor waterfalls (eg Singapore) and some are even built on water.

Biophilia: Bringing Nature into Interior Design

Nature’s power for humanity can influence our mental health, our hobbies, our travels, and our homes and workplaces. In nature, places of safety and security, allowing the mindand body to rest and recover. The same feelings can be achieved in the home, forexample through the creation of a cozy window seat or alcove bed. Outdoorrefuges are also effective, especially if they carry an element of mystery orsurprise, as with an unexpected treehouse, garden folly, or other outdoorstructure.

The biological evolution of our species took place in the wilderness, the Nature of the Late Pleistocene. For about 95% of our evolutionary history, corresponding to the Middle Paleolithic and Upper Paleolithic Eras, humans have survived as hunters-gatherers. Humans have thus perfected a set of adaptive responses to different wild environments – mainly the savannah (Orians and Heerwagen, 1992) – aimed at recognizing the quality of an environment in terms of shelters and resources (Buss, 2016). Safe and resource-rich environments are a precondition for biophilia (Fromm, 1964); they reduce the stress response and promote the restoration of cognitive processes (for a review, see Berto, 2014). Some environmental preferences (Balling and Falk, 1982; Robinson and Breed, 2020) could therefore be the result of adaptations that proved effective in our ancestors’ struggle for survival (Falk and Balling, 2010).

Children’s innate inclination to appreciate many forms of wild Nature can flourish only if it is adequately stimulated (Fattorini et al., 2017; Venturella and Barbiero, 2021). If biophilia is not stimulated in children, they tend to prefer domestic Nature (private gardens and courtyards), even when they have the freedom to access areas with high biodiversity (Hand et al., 2017a). This does not mean that today’s children are less biophilic, “but rather that their ability to act in this way has been curtailed” (Hand et al., 2017b). A biophilic personality develops over time, and for the feeling of affiliation to grow, direct and frequent exposure to Nature is required (Venturella and Barbiero, 2021).

However, Studies 1, 3, and 4 clearly also stated the importance of accessible outdoor spaces, so those patients whose mobility is less restricted can be exposed to a multisensory environment. Refuge, security, and protection were other notable parameters in the top-ranked group, indicating the need to feel safe and secure due to their compromised health, and their high level of dependency on strangers and healthcare workers. Discussions of biophilic design focus on built and natural features that create a sense of pleasure and enjoyment, such as the interplay of elements such as prospect and refuge as well as the use of daylight, views, water, and plants. Less attention is paid to ephemeral characteristics of space that derive from nature. These features, identified below, can add interest and a sense of aliveness to built spaces. Research on these topics is also summarized below to provide context for the array of nature experiences that influence human functioning.

Bring in some potted plants, a plant cover lawn, or a water feature for a smooth transition from your indoor to your outdoor living space. By making an outdoor living space, you’re gaining square footage for entertaining while maintaining a smooth transition from your home to the yard or garden. An efficient healthcare design should provide privacy as well as socializing opportunities (Study 3). Socializing opportunities can be created through spatial arrangement of seating and gathering options (Study 2), the inclusion of communal spaces, children’s play areas, semiprivate enclosures for personal conversations, and even BBQ areas (Study 3). Rather the environment should be flexible to accommodate socializing and withdrawal spaces (Study 2).

For example, a biophilic personality has many good reasons to appreciate Nature. At any rate, Nature is more likely to fascinate a biophilic personality rather than a necrophilic/biophobic one. Fromm and Wilson agree that biophilia has a biological basis (Fromm, 1973; Wilson, 1993) and that it is a fundamental human force for developing harmonious relationships between humanity and the biosphere (Fromm, 1963, 1966; Wilson, 1984, 1993). Where Wilson defines biophilia in its biological terms which relate to humanity as a species, Fromm is more attentive to the environmental and social conditions that affect the individual developing biophilia. Wilson’s definition has the advantage of being more operational because it has identified the constructs of fascination and affiliation which have allowed the operationalization of biophilia on an evolutionary basis. Spending time in nature and interacting with animals can have beneficial effects on both physical and mental health.

Explaining Biophilic Design, Its Principles And Why it Matters

biophilia design

This article discusses the 6 principles followed to achieve biophilic design for buildings. “Bring that sunshine indoors.” That can be as simple as removing heavy drapes and opting for naked windows in rooms that don’t require privacy, such as an office. Or install minimalistic roller shades that allow you to bring in the most light but still provide privacy when needed. Don’t forget to clean your home’s windows regularly to remove the haze that forms from dust, pet dander, and cooking; it’s a minor chore with a big payoff.

Biophilia as an Evolutionary Adaptation

As biophilic design aims to mimic nature, being in these kinds of rooms and spaces has similar health benefits to spending time in nature. Most outdoor spaces in cities are just concrete with some random trees distributed across them. The Prospect pattern is derived from visual preference research and spatial habitat responses, as well as cultural anthropology, evolutionary psychology (e.g., Heerwagen & Orians, 1993) and architectural analysis (e.g., Dosen & Ostwald, 2013; Hildebrand, 1991; Appleton, 1996). Health benefits are suggested to include reduced stress (Grahn & Stigsdotter, 2010); reduced boredom, irritation, fatigue, (Clearwater & Coss, 1991), and perceived vulnerability (Petherick, 2000; Wang & Taylor, 2006); as well as improved comfort (Herzog & Bryce, 2007). Mystery characterizes a place where an individual feels compelled to move forward to see what is around the corner; it is the partially revealed view ahead.

Louder, annoying sounds are more indicative of danger, and thus narrow attentional scope to focus on dealing with the danger. Let the natural world in

The objective of the Presence of Water pattern is to capitalize on the multi-sensory attributes of water to enhance the experience of a place in a manner that is soothing, prompts contemplation, enhances mood, and provides restoration from cognitive fatigue. The Robert and Arlene Kogod Courtyard in the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C., by Foster + Partners and landscape designer Kathryn Gustafson of Seattle–based Gustafson Guthrie Nichol Ltd. has seamless water sheets running across the floor, reflecting weather and lighting conditions. The objective of the Visual Connection with Nature pattern is to provide an environment that helps the individual shift focus to relax the eye muscles and temper cognitive fatigue. The effect of an intervention will improve as the quality of a view and the amount of visible biodiversity each increases. The most common biophobic responses are to spiders, snakes, predators, blood, and heights – elements that either directly threaten or signal danger through humanity’s evolutionary path.

While biophobia is arguably genetic, to a degree, both phobias are learnt response mechanisms through direct experience, culture and education which, according to Salingaros and Masden (2008), includes architectural education. Façade renovation of Suites Avenue Aparthotel by Toyo Ito, Barcelona, Spain, is biomorphic in form, while enhancing the Dynamic & Diffuse light and shadows filtering to the interior space. Biophilic design can be organized into three categories – Nature in the Space, Natural Analogues, and Nature of the Space – providing a framework for understanding and enabling thoughtful incorporation of a rich diversity of strategies into the built environment. As a middle ground, for the purpose of understanding the context of Biophilic Design, we are defining nature as living organisms and non-living components of an ecosystem – inclusive of everything from the sun and moon and seasonal arroyos, to managed forests and urban raingardens, to Nemo’s fishbowl habitat. This laid-back, dusty-green sofa feels right at home in this cozy-chic living room from @lxhome_decor.

As such, the Material Connection with Nature pattern has evolved from a limited body of scientific research on physiological responses to variable quantities of natural materials, and the impact of natural color palette, particularly the color green, has on cognitive performance. Humans have been decorating living spaces with representations of nature since time immemorial, and architects have long created spaces using elements inspired by trees, bones, wings and seashells. Many classic building ornaments are derived from natural forms, and countless fabric patterns are based on leaves, flowers, and animal skins. Contemporary architecture and design have introduced more organic building forms with softer edges or even biomimetic qualities. While informed by science, biophilic design patterns are not formulas; they are meant to inform, guide and assist in the design process and should be thought of as another tool in the designer’s toolkit.

Biophilia: Bringing Nature into Interior Design

Discussed here in brief are some key perspectives that may help focus the planning and design processes. While we have no intention of formalizing an explicit definition, some articulation of what we mean by ‘nature’ will help give context to practitioners of biophilic design. Additionally, this idea of nature essentially excludes everything from the sun and moon, your pet fish Nemo, home gardens and urban parks, to humans and the billions of living organisms that make up the biome of the human gut. Wright abstracted prairie flowers and plants for his art glass windows and ornamentation.

And while ethnicity can play a role in influencing an individual's landscape preferences, cultures and groups across the world utilize landscapes and space in different ways (128. Forsyth & Musacchio, 2005 ). Frequency of use, nature of use, participation rates and purpose of visit all vary drastically between nationalities, cultures and sub-groups. These factors do not mean that certain ethnic groups have a lower appreciation for landscape or a less significant connection with nature. These groups simply utilize and interact with nature in ways that are compatible with their culture and needs.

Given the high levels of development in tropical Singapore over the last 25 years – a period which saw the country’s populations grow by 2 million people – the government offered an incentive program to offset the loss of habitat, increase interaction with natural stimuli, and create the ‘City within a Garden’. This incentive program offers up to 75% of the costs for installing living roofs and walls (exterior and interior) for new constructions (117. Beatley, 2012 ). What’s important is that the strategy be integrative and appropriate to the character and density of the place, and not just another word for ecosystem restoration that does not reflect the human biological relationship with nature. Increasingly dense urban environments, coupled with rising land values, elevate the importance of biophilic design across a spatial continuum from new and existing buildings, to parks and streetscapes and to campus, urban and regional planning. Each context supports a platform for myriad opportunities for integrative biophilic design, and mainstreaming healthy building practices for people and society.

A good mystery condition could also be expressed through the obscuring of the boundaries and a portion of the focal subject (i.e., room, building, outdoor space, or other information source), thereby enticing the user to anticipate the full extent of the subject and explore the space further (Ikemi, 2005). Protected seating alcoves along the Henderson Bridge, Singapore provide a sense of refuge. Fractal patterns can be identified in classical art and vernacular architecture from the column capitals of ancient Greece and Egypt, the art of Ancient Mayans, Islamic and Egyptian art, Hindu temples, Angkor Wat in Cambodia (12th century), and the Eiffel Tower in Paris (1889).

Higher content of blue light (similar to skylight) produces serotonin; whereas, an absence of blue light (which occurs at night) produces melatonin. The balance of serotonin and melatonin can be linked to sleep quality, mood, alertness, depression, breast cancer and other health conditions (Kandel et al., 2013). Singapore’s Khoo Teck Puat Hospital by RMJM Architects is an excellent example of Thermal & Airflow Variability. The passive design of the hospital draws fresh air in from the exterior courtyards; the cool air helps maintain thermal comfort, while patients also have operable windows in their rooms, allowing for greater personal control.

Then there’s the world’s greenest apartment complex, the Bosco Verticale in Milan, Italy. It’s comprised of two forested skyscrapers with 2,000 tree species on their facades. Besides being biophilic, that project aims to promote plant and animal biodiversity, along with other environmental benefits. Singapore has become famous as a biophilic city, with an abundance of green walls and roofs. The Jewel Changi Airport, with the world’s tallest indoor waterfall and a hedge maze, offers one of the city’s most famous biophilic designs.

The objective of the Mystery pattern is to provide a functional environment that encourages exploration in a manner that supports stress reduction and cognitive restoration. While other ‘Nature of the Space’ patterns can be experienced in a stationary position, mystery implies movement and analysis starting from a place perceived in a fundamentally positive way. The objective of the Non-Visual Connection with Nature pattern is to provide an environment that uses sound, scent, touch and possibly even taste to engage the individual in a manner that helps reduce stress and improve perceived physical and mental health. These senses can be experienced separately, although the experience is intensified and the health effect is compounded if multiple senses are consistently engaged together. Biophilia, like air quality, thermal comfort and acoustics, is an essentialcomponent of environmental quality that expands the conversation from daylight, materials toxicity, and air, water and soil quality, to include human biologicalhealth and well-being. A different approach to integrating natural systems with urban systems is exhibited in Singapore’s ‘Skyrise Greenery’ program.

Indoor planting can be incorporated with potted plants and green walls when appropriate and with caution. Nonetheless, plants are strictly prohibited in some clinics due to infection risk. Thus, high-quality artificial plants or scents can be used to incorporate biophilic elements to some extent (Study 1, Study 3). Furthermore, patients reported using technology to listen to natural sounds to help them sleep better. The ability to appropriately scale visual, auditory, and tactile intensities are one advantage of such technology-based interventions (Study 1).

Risk can be generated by a learned or biophobic response triggered by a near and present danger. This danger, however, is inert and unable to cause harm due to a trusted element of safety. The defining difference between Risk/Peril and fear is the level of perceived threat and perceived control (Rapee, 1997). A space with a good Mystery condition has a palpable sense of anticipation, or of being teased, offering the senses a kind of denial and reward that compels one to further investigate the space.

The first known person in California to die of the virus at the time,[205] as well as the first cases in Alberta,[222] Hawaii,[223] and Utah,[224] were all former passengers of Grand Princess. A judge is expected to rule on Saturday on those defendants' requests for lenient sentences, no longer than about two years.

The operation also includes notifying the captain and the ship’s officers to coordinate with the deceased’s family, providing support, and beginning the repatriation process according to maritime laws and the protocols of the ports they visit. Schettino argued that he fell into a lifeboat because of how the ship was listing to one side, but this argument proved unconvincing. In 2015, a court found Schettino guilty of manslaughter, causing a shipwreck, abandoning ship before passengers and crew were evacuated and lying to authorities about the disaster.

On October 21, 1988, the MV Jupiter was hit by an Italian freighter off the coast of Greece while on a two-week Mediterranean study cruise, sinking shortly after. Counting the students, crew, and adults onboard, there were about 600 people onboard. The MS Mikhail Lermentov struck rocks near Cape Jackson ten days into her journey. Most of the 743 passengers and crew on board escaped in a lifeboat.

Costa Concordia is gone, but horror lingers 10 years later

On October 22, 1961, when docked near the Grenada coast, an explosion occurred in the engine room. While sinkings of large vessels are rare, these events are even more infrequent when discussing cruise ships. Over the past 100 years, there have only ever been 24 full-size cruise ships that have sunk. Oceangoing cruise ships will typically have at least one doctor and one or more nurses based on guidance from the American College of Emergency Physicians (Acep).

Bodies can be stored in shipboard morgues as needed, though not for much longer than a week. Each oceangoing cruise ship is required to carry body bags and maintain a morgue. Separate from food storage areas, most morgues are small, with room for three to six bodies.

The couple was actually cruising in an inside cabin at the time but witnesses report seeing a man strangle her and then throw her overboard. In the article, we will look at common cruise ship death causes and some examples which made it to the mainstream media. The ship sustained severe damage to its hull; it flooded and lost power, and the rudder was positioned so the ship couldn’t be steered. Cruise Ventures III purchased her, and while traveling to Charleston, South Carolina, from Halifax, Nova Scotia, the boiler broke, causing significant damage. In 1965, an ocean liner called Willem Ruys was changed into a cruise ship and renamed MS Achille Lauro. In 1953, she collided with the Angelino Lauro, though neither ship suffered extreme damage.

Most jumped to their deaths and some hung themselves in cabin bathrooms. Sadly there are a number of people who decide to end their lives on cruise ships, mostly by jumping from the ship. It’s not only passengers who do this but also sometimes crew too. There are many sources which quote 200 as the number of cruise ship deaths each year. The real number is likely to be higher as not all cruise lines and countries share their death statistics.

This averages out at just over 31 deaths a year — a tiny number given how many people go on cruises. According to her father, on June 9 crew heard a code “Alpha” blared over the ship’s intercom system—shorthand for a medical emergency. Jocson was found hanged over her cabin’s balcony railing, police say. Workers blamed the CDC for imposing onerous restrictions on travel, such as requiring company executives to sign off on a litany of health processes for disembarkation through U.S. harbors and airports at the risk of criminal penalties.

It goes without saying that you shouldn’t EVER try to climb on, or around, cruise ship balconies. Losing your room key isn’t a problem at all, lots of people do it, and if you do you just need to go to reception to get a new card issued to you. If you’re interested in cruise ship murders I recommend you watch the series Cruise Ship Killers. The show has changed the names of the people involved but the murders are real.
